Put a bowl of water with lemon slices in the microwave for 3 minutes, let the steam sit for a few minutes, then wipe the inside clean. The steam loosens splatters and dried-on food so they wipe right off, and the lemon leaves the microwave smelling fresh. It is one of the easiest kitchen cleaning jobs there is, and it needs no harsh chemicals.
What do I need?
- A microwave-safe bowl
- Water to fill the bowl about halfway
- A lemon, cut into slices
- A clean cloth or sponge
- An oven mitt, because the bowl will be hot
How do I steam clean a microwave?
- Fill the microwave-safe bowl about halfway with water and add the lemon slices.
- Place the bowl in the microwave and heat it for 3 minutes, until the water is steaming well.
- Leave the door closed for about 5 minutes after the microwave stops, so the steam can work on the grime.
- Carefully remove the hot bowl with an oven mitt.
- Wipe the inside walls, ceiling, floor, and door with the cloth or sponge. Most splatters should come off easily now.
- Lift out the turntable and wash it in the sink, then wipe it dry and put it back.
What about stuck-on spots?
If a spot still will not budge, dip the cloth in the warm lemon water and hold it on the spot for a minute before wiping again. Avoid scouring pads inside the microwave, since they can scratch the surface.
How long does it take?
The whole job takes about 10 minutes, including the 3 minutes of heating and the few minutes of standing time. It is a good quick job to do while dinner is cooking or while you are tidying the rest of the kitchen.
