Fill a bag with white vinegar, tie it around your showerhead, and leave it overnight. The vinegar dissolves the mineral buildup that clogs the spray holes, so the showerhead sprays evenly again in the morning. It is a simple, low-cost fix for weak or uneven water flow, and it uses no harsh chemicals.
What do I need?
- White vinegar
- A sturdy plastic bag, big enough to cover the showerhead
- A rubber band or twist tie to hold the bag in place
- An old toothbrush for scrubbing
- A clean cloth for wiping and drying
How do I soak a showerhead in vinegar overnight?
1. Pour enough white vinegar into the plastic bag to cover the showerhead completely.
2. Lift the bag up over the showerhead so the showerhead is fully submerged in the vinegar.
3. Secure the bag tightly around the showerhead neck with the rubber band or twist tie.
4. Leave the showerhead soaking overnight, or for at least 8 hours.
5. In the morning, remove the bag and run the shower for a minute to flush out loosened buildup.
6. Scrub the showerhead face gently with the old toothbrush, then wipe it dry with the clean cloth.
What if the showerhead still sprays unevenly?
If a few spray holes are still blocked, poke them gently with a toothpick and run the shower again. For a fixed showerhead that cannot be removed, the bag method works just as well as soaking a detachable showerhead in a bowl, because the vinegar stays in contact with the showerhead all night.
How long does it take?
Setting up the vinegar soak takes about 5 minutes, and the overnight soak does the work while you sleep. The morning rinse and scrub take another 5 minutes, so the whole job costs you about 10 minutes of active time.
